A tandem roller, also known as a double drum roller, is a large and powerful compaction machine primarily used in road construction, paving projects, and similar applications. It consists of two heavy drums, one in the front and one in the rear, which are typically made of steel and can be smooth or equipped with specialised patterns for specific compaction purposes. These rollers are propelled by powerful engines, often diesel-powered, providing the necessary force and traction to manoeuvre and compact various surfaces effectively. They can range in size and weight, with larger models weighing several tons. The two drums of the tandem roller work in tandem, rotating and compacting the surface as the machine moves forward. The weight and vibration from the drums help compress and smooth out soil, asphalt, or aggregate materials, reducing air gaps and creating a denser and more stable surface. Tandem rollers are equipped with features such as water tanks to prevent materials from sticking to the drums and to control dust, vibration settings to adjust compaction intensity, and operator cabins for comfort and control.
